French archaeologists have taken pottery from ancient Pompeii and
played the grooves back like a record to get the sounds of the
pottery workshop, including laughter. Click "Telecharger la video" to
play the short video which contains a sample of the audio.

So Tom Edison was NOT the one to invent the Phonograph Recorder,
after all!  (I guess we have to give him credit for inventing the
Phonograph Player, tho...)

This appears to be a hoax (but I hope it isn't):

Good work Sean,

It seemed quite obviously to be a hoax - if you think about the simple
science involved in making an audio recording - you need some way to
actually 'gather' the sound, not just a recording medium. So unless the
grooves were made by, say a small stick on the end of a large horn with a
membrane stretched across the opening, you wouldn't expect to record any
sound.

I couldn't find anything at www.snopes.com, but didn't think of looking at
the museum of hoaxes.

Cheers,
SP
