This reminds me of when I was a teaching assistant at the University of
Washington.
The university decided to make it a requirement that students from all
departments had to take a "W" course from the English department. The "W"
stood for essay writing. It was felt all students should practice having a
firm grasp of essay writing.
This left the English department scrabbling for enough people to help tutor
these extra students and grade their papers. They hired all willing
post-grads and a few fourth year students (me!).
I've got some hysterical stories from that job. In relation to the above link
I used to (ab)use my position by getting a bunch of students together to look
at the rare books in the university library. For enough students they would
pull out their original illuminated manuscripts and show them to us. Wow!
Intensely meticulous and beautiful without the help of a computer.
Cheers,
Katherine
