"Recently, the UN Human Rights Committee issued a report excoriating the
United States for its human rights violations. It focuses on violations
of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which
the country is party."

The US has long had a very poor record, exacerbated and prolonged by a
widespread refusal to look at or talk honestly about internal human
rights issues due to a deep-seated need to maintain belief in the
national virtue and a refusal to accept even constructive criticism.

Note that I'm the first to admit that my own country, Australia, also
has serious internal human rights issues that we are also reluctant to
acknowledge or address.
