"This hybridisation of the arts and business is nothing new of course –
it’s been going on for centuries – but they have always been
uncomfortable bed-fellows. But even artists have to eat, and the fuel of
commerce and industry is innovation and novelty. Hey! Let’s trade. “Will
work for food!” as the street-beggars sign says."
A wonderful essay. Via Muse, who added:
"Linds Redding, a New Zealand-based art director who worked at BBDO and
Saatchi & Saatchi, died last month at aged 52 from an inoperable
esophageal cancer. What he has to say here needs to be apparent to
everyone. We need to stop and take a good hard look at what we are doing
and what it really means. We then need to start creating real
alternatives to life as we know it, rather than sticking a bandaid on
certain bits and hoping the problem will go away."
Share and enjoy,
