Elon Musk is worried about AI. So he's (as usual) putting his money
where his mouth is, and funding a lab that will develop AI on par
with the tech giants, then open-source it.
There's more to it than that. One of the big problems facing current
AI research is that big tech companies like Google and Facebook are
snapping up all the big AI researchers, meaning most AI development
happens behind locked doors. There's a serious brain drain in the
field. A project like OpenAI makes it easier for the world to
diagnose flaws in AI.
And of course this also aligns with Musk's business goals. He needs
deep AI to drive Teslas autonomously, and for a SpaceX rocket to
react to a complex fault in the nanoseconds that determine successful
override or complete disintegration.
Which isn't to say this is an ignoble project. We all act to further
our interests. It's just really interesting to see all the decisions
and factors behind this initiative.
