Short answer: Not only because some politicians are heavily lobbied by
fossil fuel industries, but also because it's become part of tribal
virtue signalling. A certain brand of conservatism revels in a myth of
"rugged individualism" and reviles anything that their opponents
support, particularly anything that requires regulation or accepting
that it's unfair to impose negative externalities on other people. The
world was made for them to exploit, and exploit it they shall; if you
can't play the game equally well, that's your own fault.
