"The chocolate giant Mars is promising to spend close to $1 billion over
the next few years fighting climate change."
Smart move, and I hope it does inspire other businesses. I believe
they're sincere, because one of the possible consequences of severe
climate change could be the end of cocoa. Of course there are
substitutes and they also sell products that don't contain chocolate,
but I'm sure they'd much rather continue to do what they're best known
for. Part of the point of creating a company is so that it can live on
separately from its founders, and every large business should consider
not only the "long term" on the scale of years, but also decades.
