Here's the background:
https://blog.patreon.com/updating-patreons-fee-structure/
Let me start by saying that I am a great fan of Patreon. However, I
believe they have made another major mistake with these changes that
have upset many people - and this isn't the first time.
Patreon serves two groups of people: creators and patrons. One of the
important services they provided to me as a patron is the aggregation of
payments into a single monthly payment to keep transaction costs down
and assist with budgeting. I understand that creators have been asking
for the ability to charge up front for the last two years, but the
implementation that Patreon have chosen is a disaster and they need to
find another way.
I try to spread my limited Patreon budget across as many creators as
possible, particularly those with the smallest incomes and number of
supporters, and consequently most of my payments are at the $1 level. I
certainly don't want a sudden fee increase of 38% to $1.38 for each
creator. I would be happy to pay 0.35 + 2.9% or whatever transaction
fees are necessary ONCE on my single monthly payment. I also don't want
to see multiple payments on different dates.
I will not be using the "charge up front" option as presently
implemented, and I suggest that other patrons also boycott this feature.
Furthermore, this is the second time this year that Patreon has caused
alarm with ill-considered changes. Perhaps they should consider more
market research among their patrons or some sort of patron advisory
group in future if they wish to avoid losing more trust of the patrons.
Thanks for reading.
Regards,
Andrew
