'Fixing "unnecessarily cruel" dole payments is a more urgent priority
than budget repair, a leading economist says.'
When you increase welfare payments, that money is immediately circulated
and also benefits all the businesses that get paid, so it has flow-on
benefits to the economy. Conversely, if you continue to starve the poor,
you increase the drain on other public services like health care,
emergency services and police.
