"“My life could have been 100% different if one person would have told
me the truth,” Irene Kuzemko told BuzzFeed News.
“So many intersex people experience secrecy, lies, medicalization of
their bodies, human rights violations, unnecessary surgeries, and
medical interventions,” she says.
This is despite the World Health Organisation, the United Nations
Convention Against Torture, and several other human rights organisations
condemning unnecessary surgeries on intersex children. A burgeoning
number of jurisdictions have also taken steps to recognise it as a human
rights abuse, or have outlawed it: Malta, Uruguay, Portugal, and
California."
