"Melbourne YA novelist Alison Evans says fan fiction provides a safe
space to give and receive direct, and almost instant, feedback on
writing. But despite its commercialisation, the perception of fan
fiction as being an unimportant hobby of socially awkward or obsessive
teenage women persists.

"Like anything that is mostly made by teen girls, it's ridiculed and not
taken seriously by other people. But fic has some of the best stories
I've ever read, and there are heaps that I re-read or think about
often," Evans, the author of Ida and Highway Bodies, says."
