"There are those who ask why Sergei put himself at risk by defending
Hermitage and testifying against dangerous people. He did it because it
was the right thing to do, because he believed in the rule of law in
Russia and because he was disgusted with public officials who would
abuse the powers of their office to harm the people they should be serving."

Via Paul Ferguson, who wrote "Note: I neglected to post this on 16
November, but I post this now because of a conversation I had today
explaining to someone the complex background of the Magnitsky Act and
the subsequent sanctions on Russia, the efforts by Putin and his
oligarch friends to get them removed by getting Trump to (unsuccessfully
so far) remove them after he was elected to office in 2016. For anyone
who does not understand the background I highly suggest reading up on this."
