"A “staggering” and “horrific” proportion of allegations of disability
benefit fraud that are made by the public are eventually found to be
completely false, the government’s own figures have revealed."

Garry Knight added:
"I tweeted about this earlier today:
“Allegations of disability benefits fraud are often hate crimes that go
unrecorded, and often due to gross ignorance about disability. Given the
proportion of disabled people in the population, might be better to
learn about it now rather than when you have to.”
Many people haven’t heard of Hanlon’s Razor, a principle which goes
something like, “Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately
explained by stupidity.” And yet, many of the disabled people I have
known have been victims of similar hate crimes. Even on a small level.
One walking stick user emerged from an accessible toilet to be told by a
bystander that he isn’t disabled because he doesn’t use a wheelchair.
The bystander didn’t notice that the man also didn’t use a blind
person’s stick or a hearing aid. The bystander had a very narrow,
ignorant definition of disability. Why is that? And why isn’t this
taught about in schools? Not just taught about disability but also the
ignorance about and general fear of disability and the effect all this
has on disabled people."
