"Shortly after 9pm on Thursday 9 December, the Circus Oz Board released
a media statement announcing they would be winding up the company
following their inability to convince the company’s approximately 100
members of the apparent need for organisational reform.
ArtsHub published a story about this decision the following day, Friday
10 December, once the media embargo about the announcement lifted at
11:30am.
The Board’s version of events has been challenged this week in a
statement released by 68 of the company members on Tuesday 21 December.
The new statement emphatically rejects the Board’s claim that company
members voted to close the company.
The statement also alleges the Board failed to consult with company
members about the results of a confidential straw poll concerning the
company’s future (held on Wednesday 8 December) before releasing the
results of said poll to the media the following day.
The Board’s actions were recently identified as part of a broader trend
towards the corporatisation of arts boards by academics Tully Barnett,
Julian Meyrick and Justin O’Connor in an article published by ArtsHub
this week."
