At this point I decided I could cram in some plot exposition. Had I not needed some (this story was not exactly moving along briskly before now, let's face facts), this idea would have required dialogue only in the last panel. I think using those otherwise silent panels to explain what was going on worked better than if I'd slowed down the action later to do it.
