The Zoos

Melbourne has three genuinely world class zoos. I can highly recommend all of them. To better plan incorporating the zoos into this event, here are some details:

Melbourne Zoo

The Melbourne Zoo has been upgrading, and is looking more natural all the time. It contains mostly the smaller animals from around the world including Australia.

Free guided tours are available from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

We may meet the keepers or see the feeding of these animals at these times:

Lorikeets 9:45am and 3:45pm
Wombats 11:15am
Pelicans 2:30pm
Penguins 3:30pm
Seals
(weekends & public holidays)
2:00pm
Orang-utans 1:00pm
Otters 1:15pm
Meerkats 1:30pm

The Melbourne Zoo is easily accessible by public transport from the city

Healesville Sanctuary

The Healesville Sanctuary contains only native flora and fauna in an open range environment, but don't let that fool you. The kangaroos and wallabies are happy to hop right up for attention.

Most exhibits and demonstrations are available from 9:00am to 5:00pm, but the impressive birds of prey demonstration occurs only between 10:00am to 3:30pm.

Healesville Sanctuary is easily accessible by public transport from the city, but it is a long trip and the whole experience is really an all day affair.

Victoria's Open Range Zoo at Werribee

The Open Range Zoo contains primarily large African and Asian animals in a spacious natural reserve. Some of the animals there are even extinct in their native environment and are being bred for reintroduction into their homelands. Tours of this zoo must be pre-booked.

On Saturdays at 2:10pm we can go on a special "behind the scenes" zoo management tour. This also needs to be pre-booked.

To get to Werribee Park we must make special transport arrangements, since public transport will not deliver us there.

Entry Prices:

Adult: $15.80
Concession: $?

Per person for pre-arranged tour groups over 20:

Prepurchase tickets for going to all three zoos:

You may also gain access to all three zoos and others around Australia by becoming a member of "Friends of the Zoos". However, you will need to apply soon to make sure you get your member card before the meet.
