Shift

I knew when I moved to Melbourne that I would have to shift boxes, but I did not realise that I had "shifted myself" and that once I had arrived here I would have to "shift for myself." As I lay one night in my shift, shifting mental gears from the day's events to more metaphysical matters, I contemplated how if someone is lazy and unemployed they are described as shiftless, therefore it makes sense that someone who is doing what it takes to get by is "shifting for themselves." And "shifted" is a more colourful word than "moved", though it implies to me a more leisurely pace or perhaps a pace dictated by the heat for those living in the outback.
