She was the wife of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and greatly beloved of the Country Women's Association despite being a Labour party member. She is the image of the staunch wife who stands by her man even when he is off fooling around. This is a bit of an English political schtick. It's okay if a parliament member has been found fooling around if his wife is willing to stand by him. Go figure.
