Hi Dudes!
This had me giggling:
From chemist Ira Remsen's writings:
While reading a textbook of chemistry I came upon the statement, "nitric acid
acts upon copper." I was getting tired of reading such absurd stuff and I was
determined to see what this meant...

A story was told to us at RMIT in '79 about a student who spilt a Nitric acid
solution on his labcoat, took it off to dry and then put it back on. However
when he next lit up his Bunsen burner the coat went "whooommmfff" as the acid
had converted the coat to nitrocellulose (aka guncotton, the well known
explosive). This of course is almost certainly urban legend, though it was not
unknown for RMIT chem students to put guncotton in the ashtrays of the Oxford
hotel opposite the campus.
