"I've injured myself so many times it is hard not to think of myself as broken.
It's more accurate to say my body was badly constructed. They broke the mould
before they made me.
I injure myself in my sleep and wake to find a part of my body no longer
functioning, giving me blinding pain and in need of months, if not years, to
repair.
All of this from an inherited disorder known as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
After a lifetime of wondering about my weird body, I only recently was
diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
The diagnosis explained so much about my life. It also forced me to reconsider
my future.
I'd had a history of injuries dating back to when I was six or seven years old
playing rugby league in country Queensland.
Those memories are a mist of beautiful sunny days, grassy playing fields – and
repeated severe pain."
Via Muse, who wrote "The Australian Broadcast Corporation just put up an
article highlighting Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Which is nice, because most people
don’t know what it is…and I have it. In any case let me encourage you to make
friends with someone with a disability! Encourage your work, your stores, your
cinemas, and more do what they can to be inclusive."
Cheers,
