"Mask mandates in most indoor settings have been dropped in New South Wales,
Victoria and the ACT, with Queensland to follow later this week.
Without a mandate, mask use tends to drop, so we can expect only a minority of
people to be masked in public indoor spaces.
With thousands of cases a day and just over half (57%) of Australians having
received a third COVID vaccine dose and children still under-vaccinated, we may
see a surge in infections.
While masks are a small inconvenience, they remain vital in preventing
SARS-CoV-2, because the virus spreads through the air we breathe.
Some people will continue to wear masks to stay safe and achieve a more normal
life through the pandemic. Here are five reasons to keep wearing yours."

When I go shopping I still wear a mask, but then I live in an aria where
people have never had a concept of social distancing. During the mask
mandate you would see half of the people wearing them, and half of those
wearing them below the nose or under the chin. Big contrast to the place
where I was living when it all started. Predominantly Asian community
where it wasn't uncommon to see people wearing masks before covid. I think
people here have been complacent and have forgotten it aint over, and a
vaccine helps, but it isn't a magic bullet.

Exactly. And if we care about those who can't take the vaccine or for whom the
vaccine isn't as effective, or about people who are vaccinated and recover from
COVID but then have long-term effects - including increased risk of stroke and
heart trouble later in life - then we need to continue fighting the spread of
COVID in every way we can.
