"This is what makes this particular email scam so fiendishly brilliant.
The fraudsters understand something central about modern capitalism, which is …
… companies screw their customers
all the time. Major, brand-name firms
behave in scammy ways. Even if their behavior is (in their eyes, anyway) legal,
it certainly walks and quacks like a scam.
This primes all of us in the consumer population to instantly believe a scam
might be real. When we get an email that claims to be from a well-known company
saying
oh yeah bruh we just charged you $433 for stuff you never ordered,
that seems like completely plausible corporate activity.
Or to put it another way: We
expect, in the course of normal everyday life,
to be defrauded by brand-name firms."
Cheers,
