"Next time you put your kitchen scraps into the green waste bin, know that it
is going to a better place.
If you’re in Melbourne’s north, your FOGO – Food Organics, Garden Organics – is
likely destined for Epping, where Repurpose It will transform this juicy
assortment into high-grade compost and landscape materials. And never say
“waste”; all sorts of leftovers are resources for Repurpose It, which is at the
forefront of the closed-loop, garbage-into-gold sector that is reducing
Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
The company’s new FOGO composting facility has come online just as several
councils in Melbourne are admitting they don’t have the processing power to
deal with food waste. According to The Age, some councils have yet to start
food waste collection, despite a state government edict in 2020 that all
councils must have a FOGO scheme by 2030. Other councils said they didn’t have
enough customers for their compost.
“That’s why we’re expanding our facility,” says George Hatzimanolis, founder,
and chief executive of Repurpose It. “We have capacity now to process more
FOGO, and we use the compost in our soils and landscaping products, which are
100 per cent organic. We’ll continue to build our capabilities to meet council
and community needs.”"
