"Under the awning of a hotel in Sydney's Kings Cross, Chris Thomson is woken
from a cold night's sleep by staff setting up for al fresco dining.
His swag and two splayed cardboard boxes are a far cry from the hotel suite he
stayed in for nine months during the early days of the pandemic.
It's also not the life he envisioned for himself when he was growing up.
"I definitely didn't want to be living on the streets in the Cross," he said.
"I didn't put my hand up for that one."
Mr Thomson — Taz to his friends — is one of 1,500 rough sleepers in New South
Wales who were offered emergency accommodation during lockdowns in 2020."
