"As a middle-class white American woman, I grew up beholden to white American
environmentalism. Humans and nature were fundamentally at odds, and the best
thing for nature was to keep humans out of it.
Two years ago, however, while researching a novel, I knew I needed a new,
deeper environmentalism. I needed a text on which to lay my foundation, a
bible, if you will, on people and nature.
I found it when I used Interlibrary Loan to borrow a copy of
Uncommon Ground:
Rethinking the Human Place in Nature. Not only has this book helped me rethink
my writing and my ideas about nature, but it has allowed me to envision what a
new kind of environmentalism could look like."
