"Punishing air strikes. Devastating ground assault. Massacres. Children caught
in the conflict. More than 15,000 people arrested; 2,300 civilians dead.
Conflict and instability across the country.
This is not Ukraine, though it could be. This is Myanmar, a country in our
region at war with itself. It may not be a traditional war, according to
international law. But the effects on innocent civilians and wider instability
for the region are the same.
This is a war that demands Australia's attention, not least because Australian
Sean Turnell is unfairly caught up in the political crossfire.
Since February 1, 2021, the military has initiated war on its own people. The
military overthrew a democratically elected parliament and has attempted to
take control of the entire country.
The military's plans have not succeeded and, instead, war on a scale both small
and large rages across the country.
The anti-military and pro-democratic front are putting up strong resistance.
The National Unity Government is widely recognised as the democratic body whose
goal is to end military rule and establish a new civilian government. Yet the
military's violent tactics have left few options for a solely non-violent
movement in response.
The People's Defence Force has emerged as the main armed wing of the National
Unity Government, using force to support the goal of ending military rule. In
addition, the country is home to many pre-existing ethnic armed forces, many of
whom have again taken up arms against the military."
