"I spent a week in Japan — a country I’ve wanted to visit for the longest time
and which holds all sorts of fascination for me — with my wife.
In advance of travelling, I read Mark Ravina’s
To Stand With The Nations of
the World: Japan’s Meiji Restoration in World History to fill gaps in my
knowledge of the Meiji Restoration. I also read Ruth Ozeki’s
A Tale for the
Time Being because I wanted to read some contemporary fiction on Japan and
asked my AI ‘friend’, Pi, for recommendations. I picked this one from the list
it put together for me. Finally, I read Haruki Murakami’s
Underground because
I remembered that a friend recommended it to me many years ago after which I
bought it but never got round to reading it (until now).
After reading Ravina’s book, I (re)watched Ed Zwick’s 2003 epic,
The Last
Samurai. And before that, I also watched the Apple TV series,
Drops of God
which is set mostly in Japan.
I learnt a lot from all of these plus countless other articles and YouTube
videos. And then I saw and experienced much more while actually there. So maybe
this post is a meditation on Japan? I don’t know. You decide after reading (if
you make it all the way to the end)."
