'When Hannah Nicklin dreams, she sometimes finds herself in a panic, searching
for a way out of an apartment she's never been in before, terrified of an
approaching tsunami.
In other dreams, she's packing as flood waters slowly rise over her feet.
"I've been having those dreams my whole life," she says.
Dr Nicklin, a 38-year-old writer and game developer, was born in the English
county of Lincolnshire. She says the region is famous for producing "one,
Margaret Thatcher and two, nothing else."
But if it did have a "third most famous feature", she says, it would be that
the county largely lies below sea level.
Its unfortunate geography became apparent in 1953, when a heavy storm surge in
the North Sea caused major flooding across Lincolnshire and other parts of
eastern England, killing 307 people.
One of Dr Nicklin's earliest memories is colouring in a map of her hometown on
the dining room table. Her mother was looking to move house and tasked her
daughter with shading areas of Lincolnshire in red, orange or green. Anywhere
red signified, in the event of another flood, it would be underwater.
Today, Dr Nicklin is the studio head of indie game developer Die Gute Fabrik,
which — with a fluctuating team of 10 to 20 people working from home across the
world — just created its sixth game,
Saltsea Chronicles.
It's perhaps no surprise the pastel world of
Saltsea Chronicles has
experienced its own apocalyptic flood, and its citizens and communities have
had to rebuild atop the ruins.'
