"There are many myths about politics still circulating in our popular
imagination. One is that the Left stands for change, even revolutionary change,
while the Right stands for order and tradition.

Another myth is that people tend to be more liberal in their youth but grow
conservative with age. Universities are hotbeds of leftist ideology that
exacerbate this generational divide by radicalizing young people.

And finally, there’s the myth that the big government preferred by the Left
might make us more materially secure and relatively equal, but would do so at
the cost of freedom, innovation, and economic growth.

In fact, all of these common assumptions are wrong. To understand the trends in
twenty-first-century politics, you need to recognize where the conflict between
left and right really lies. That is the theme of this essay."
