"Americans are hooked on a feelin’.
We’re high on believin’… that we’re the land of the free.
Hell, we’re the country that, in a fit of pique, renamed French fries “freedom
fries” because — obvies — we’re the only people who really know how to do
freedom right.
Except we aren’t. Not by a long shot.
We kid ourselves that because our economy is more laissez-faire than Europe’s,
that makes us more free. It’s about as stupid as saying your car is faster
because you took out the brakes.
We flatter ourselves that because our government is hamstrung by
anti-democratic features like the Senate and the Electoral College, that makes
us safer from tyranny. It’s about as stupid as saying you fixed your alignment
by removing the steering wheel.
(Sorry for all the car metaphors. Americans love cars. Public transportation is
socialism.)
I’ve written a slew of articles about why our political system is
dysfunctional. Check them out when you’re done here. But in this article I want
to talk about why America’s beloved system of “free enterprise” isn’t nearly as
free as we’d like to believe.
So without further ado, let’s get into it."
Cheers,
