About STERNBRÜCKE
The Sternbrücke is an almost 100-year-old innercity railroad bridge in Hamburg,
Germany, that spans a busy intersection. Now, the Sternbrücke is to be
demolished and with it the shops and music clubs underneath. With the
Sternbrücke, a unique piece of urban culture is being lost. A special place
that is close to the hearts of many people in Hamburg and the lovely live music
venues around this area were the educational center of countless live musicians
from this town.
The city of Hamburg and German Railways (Deutsche Bahn) did not consider
renovating the old bridge to be a viable option. Without any public
participation beforehand, plans were presented in 2020, with the new bridge
being more than three times as high as the current one. Many people missed any
opportunity to be heard and get involved, and they are still protesting today
for a rethink of the new design, which is supposed to be more compatible with
the neighborhood.
However, planning was not resumed and the Sternbrücke is to be demolished.
While all shops and clubs have to move out by the end of 2023, the citizens'
initiative
Initiative Sternbrücke is trying to stop the demolition with a
lawsuit."
