I step into a local restaurant that recently opened up in the neighborhood.
The area where I live is a little run-down with a lot of people looking for
work, so having a new place open to eat, especially one that looks a little
nice, is a bit of an event for the area.
I take a seat with my husband, and the waitstaff takes our order — simple bar
and grill fare. As we’re looking around the place, admiring the simple yet
pretty décor, my husband’s eyes go wide.
Husband: “Oh, my God! Look!”
My eyes dart over to where he’s looking. Is it a celebrity? An accident?
What?
Me: “I don’t see anything?”
Husband: “The sign on the wall, look! Near the kitchen!”
I zero in on a laminated sign on the wall, which has a large pile of receipts
taped to the bottom.
Sign: “We know times are tough, and there is less money to go around, but we
still get hungry. All the meal tickets below have been paid for in advance.
Just grab one, bring it to a server, and they’ll get you your meal.”
Me: “Oh… wow.”"
