"“It’s Monday. It’s triage time. The mystery illness giving everyone a fever,
cough and sore throat continues. What could it be?” posted Dr Triska, a GP in
the Surrey Hills, at the beginning of the week. “Wish we had some tests.”
Covid is the word that dares not speak its name. The country appears to have
taken a collective decision never to mention the mutating virus again. It’s
understandable. For two years we were traumatised by lockdowns, lateral flow
tests, the rule of six, empty classrooms, “don’t kill granny” campaigns and
cancelled events. Few want to go back. What’s the point in picking over the
scabs? It’s healthy to try to move on. Who cares any more whether the virus
started in a lab or a wet market? It’s 2024.
The problem is that surgeries and hospital wards are filling up with wheezing
patients. Some have flu, others respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). But in the
run-up to Christmas, 6.1 per cent of Londoners were thought to have the Covid
virus, 4.2 per cent nationally, according to ONS figures. That’s 2.5 million
people and the figures are rising after two weeks of indoor festivities and
wet, freezing conditions as children return to school."
