'Ireland's prime minister says that a fight for Ukraine is a "fight for wider
European values."
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar made the comments in a
Euronews interview at the
annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday.
"We stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes, and Ukraine needs financial
support from the European Union and the US and other allies," he said.
Varadkar said he believes it will be possible for the European Council to
approve a new €50 billion package of grants and loans for Ukraine at its next
meeting on 1 February.
But he says if it is not possible for the EU to come to an agreement - with
Hungary stalling the process so far - then individual countries should act
together to provide the assistance Ukraine needs.
"I'd much prefer to see us do it on the basis of unanimity. But we have to have
a plan B and a fallback option. And to me that would be the governments that
are willing and able to support Ukraine [...] would do so on a multilateral
basis."
Varadkar said the "vast majority" of governments in Europe are in favour of
passing the European Council's €50 billion package for Ukraine.'
