"After 10 months of hard work, blood, sweat, Takis and determination, my first
“Weird Al” Yankovic stop motion animation fan video is finally here!!! This is
a labor of love project of which I am extremely proud for a multitude of
reasons.
I first learned about “Weird Al” back in second grade by way of my cousin Jordi
introducing Al’s YouTube videos to me and my siblings. That led to long car
rides chanting about how much we loved Rocky Road, being trapped in the
drive-thru, and living in an Amish Paradise!!
I started building by hand the Al Yankovic puppet in March 2023 and completed
him in September. During that time, I pondered how I would bring him to life
(like Frosty!) in a short but sweet way. It wasn’t until this year on my 24th
birthday, May 3rd, that I learned that May 3rd, 2023 was also the 40th
anniversary of “Weird Al”’s first ever eponymously-titled studio album. I
thought it only appropriate that, this year, I stop motion animate his first
ever single, “My Bologna,” which was also featured on his debut album!
Throughout the entire process, my mentor and former CalArts Experimental
Animation professor, Stephen Chiodo (of the Chiodo Brothers), generously gave
me tips and tricks for stop motion puppet building and animation. My high
school alma mater, Providence in Burbank, CA, graciously provided the studio
space in which I spent 4 consecutive days around the clock, filming and tying
the entire project together. Just in time for Christmas! I could not have
completed this project without the help of so many wonderful people whom I love
and appreciate from the bottom of my heart. They are listed in the end credits
of the video.
