"There’s been much discussion about how artificial intelligence (AI) will
affect every part of our society, from school assignments to the music
industry.

But while policymakers continue to debate how best to regulate AI, there’s a
question that’s received little attention: how ready are our freedom of
information laws to deal with new technology?

Freedom of information laws are important because they help keep governments
accountable and transparent. Without them, key wrongdoings can remain secret.

As technology continues to evolve rapidly, it’s time for a fundamental rethink
of Australia’s freedom of information regime to make it fit for purpose for
2024 and beyond."
