"Fantasy isn’t all about being a Chosen One and defeating the Dark Lord.
Of course, we die-hard fans all enjoy going into battle mode, waving
non-existent or actual (any takers for the Elder Wand? Kidding!) wands while
flinging an Expelliarmus here or casting a Patronus there. But tucking into a
pumpkin pasty while going starry-eyed over some new fangled cafe’s take on
Butterbeer is also part of the experience. (The number of times I’ve considered
buying a truly overpriced Chocolate Frog or a minuscule bag of Bertie’s All
Flavour Beans on a bookstore trip is frankly obscene.)
There’s more to it than food, though. Yes, the Hobbit themed parties of one’s
dreams come attached with second breakfasts and luncheons and tea but it’s
really about that cozy armchair feeling. Who can say no to the chance of
relaxing one’s eyes and mind while the world burns?
Enjoying a low stakes adventure where trolls, robots and magicians discover
lush worlds, get into shenanigans and do nothing more tiring than fall in love
can be downright cathartic. It’s the book equivalent of what Darcy does in
WandaVision, munching on her crisps, vicariously enjoying a black-and-white
50’s pastiche of one of our most unique Marvel superhero couplings."
An excellent overview of the field. This article has given me a whole lot of
books to add to my wishlist!
Share and enjoy,
