"An Post, the Irish post office, has released a new series of stamps, “Imagine
Ireland,” generated by “AI artist” and advertising executive Kasia Oźmin.
The publicity posits Oźmin as a “renowned designer and AI artist.” Her main
experience is as an advertising agency creative director.
An Post has been into “AI” for a while. In March this year, An Post let you
design your own St Patrick’s Day postcard with images, and even text, from
“Azure OpenAI Service.” In December 2023, An Post sent every resident of
Ireland a Christmas card that looked very like touched-up AI output.
But the new stamps aren’t just AI-generated — they’re NFTs as well! Remember
NFTs?
An NFT is a digital token on a blockchain. NFT promoters claim the token
represents a real object or image in some sense — though not one that links
back to the real object in any meaningful manner.
In the recent cryptocurrency bubble, it was obvious to everyone except the
crypto grifters that NFTs were as stupid as they sounded. The American
Philatelic Society is pretty sure that NFT “stamps” are likely to be various
sorts of scam and will not be suited to collectors."
