"Tick this box, pay a few extra dollars and poof! — your flight has just been
made carbon-neutral. This is what Qantas customers are led to believe, and we
might be about to find out whether it stacks up.
Flying is one of the most emissions-intensive forms of travelling and will be
one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonise, but that doesn't stop
airlines from spruiking their sustainability credentials.
Those credentials are under scrutiny as regulators look to crack down on
greenwashing, with Australia's consumer watchdog, the Australian Competition
and Consumer Commission (ACCC), declaring it an enforcement priority for 2024.
Research and advocacy group Climate Integrity and the Environmental Defenders
Office have lodged a formal complaint against Qantas, asking for an
investigation into the airline's sustainability and climate claims.
There's a precedent for this. Earlier this year Dutch airline KLM got in
trouble with the courts in the Netherlands, who found it misled customers with
vague green claims, and Climate Integrity says Qantas is doing the same thing."
