'A Canberra doctor has been accused of discrimination for cancelling a teenage
transgender patient's GP appointment.

The teenager, Sandy*, had booked into the GP to catch up on adolescent
vaccinations she had missed while absent from school on days they had been
administered.

She had also been seeking a mental health plan and a possible referral to a new
transgender health clinic that recently opened in the ACT.

Sandy's mother was shocked when the appointment was suddenly cancelled only
hours after it had been confirmed.

"They said they don't have experience in trans issues, so they need to cancel
the appointment," she said.

Sandy has only socially transitioned and has not undergone any medical
transition.

Her mother said the family had been looking for a "transgender accepting" GP in
Canberra and was assured by staff that "it would be no issue".

The clinic had warned them that some doctors were not willing to prescribe
hormones or oversee gender transition processes because of insurance
limitations.

"She's not undergoing any hormone treatment at the moment that would make it
difficult to provide those services to her," her mother said.

"They are services that any doctor should be able to provide to any child,
regardless of whether they're trans or not, and it should take no specialist
knowledge of trans medical issues in order to provide those services."'
