Puppet government

GeeDubya Bush had been in office only a few weeks at the time, and one person who wrote in expressed distress that I would pick on the new president at a time when it was so important for Americans to come together again.
But at the time, and ever since, I always felt that the Bush folks' pleas for unity and bipartisanship were silly, given that there's simply no way they'd have backed down and let a Democratic president do his job in peace.
A healthy democracy requires people willing to draw the president as a sock puppet. Besides, as we'll see over the next few days, this was hardly the first or last time O&M would touch on matters political.
