A complex inter-related system of described internal and external states, and actions which suggest a living, sapient being who is self-motivated and self-consistent, though perhaps evolving. Characters may be human or non-human, but they must be exhibited as having some sense of self-awareness, otherwise they are merely scene-setting furniture.
