At the time I purchased my Xerox SmallPRINTER, around 1994, inkjets used heat to propel the ink onto the paper. I found the results blotchy and not as crisp as I could get from a laser printer. This was important to me in the creation of originals for publication. These days other methods are used for propelling the ink which may make the quality of an inkjet superior to a laser. However, I still need to more closely examine the results myself.
