decided to set the record straight on the underlying causes of the riots
that rocked France last month, this was his medium of choice.
The resulting 13-minute drama, made with an off-the-shelf software based
on the virtual world of video games, has provoked a small firestorm of
comment in the US - Chan's intended audience - as well as in his homeland,
due to its portrayal of deep-seated racism in France.
But it also landed like a bombshell in the far-flung but insular world of
amateur machinima film makers, who suddenly woke up to the fact that their
hybrid medium could be used for social or political commentary and not
