"In New Zealand, what was once a National Park is now a ‘legal
personality’ – and by the end of the year, the country’s third largest
river is likely to be recognised as having its own presence, needs, and
wellbeing too."

While far from the only possible approach, I think the "legal personhood
for the environment" idea has much to commend it, and hope it continues
to be successful not only in New Zealand but hopefully also in other
places including Australia, the US, Asia and all around the world.
