7 functionalities the scholarly literature should have

"I find it rather frustrating that some of the most basic
functionalities we have come to expect from virtually every digital
object are still excluded from scholarly articles, making the literature
much less useful than it could be. Some of these functionalities are
more than 20 years old."

These are all things the academic Hypertext community (including those
of us at Project Xanadu) have been saying since the 1960s. But if the
academic publishers continue to refuse to innovate, eventually everyone
will route around them. Even regulatory capture and the ears of
politicians cannot block progress forever.
