"Tianqi Lithium, a Chinese company, recently paid more than $4 billion
to become the second-largest shareholder in Sociedad Química y Minera
(SQM), a Chilean mining company. The deal gives the company effective
control over nearly half the current global production of lithium, a
critical component in battery technology."

Via Muse, who wrote: "China’s moves to monopolise lithium are moves to
own the future. Much of our new more environmental technologies require
lithium for the batteries. We should be paying more attention to what
China is doing and its relations with both Africa and South America."
