"There's little doubt at this point that America's economic activity is
increasingly dominated by a small population of gigantic firms — or
firms whose power extends through vast networks of franchises or
contract workers, well beyond the ostensible boundaries of the ruling
companies themselves. That development has its defenders, and some of
their arguments have a fair amount of bite. (We'll get to those in a
minute.) But the most fundamental and important claims made by the
champions of bigness are arguably also the most wrong: Namely, that
greater size and market clout results in more innovation, more
productivity, and better pay for employees."
