"Peru became the first country in South America to expressly recognize wildlife
trafficking as part of a law against organized crime, said Oceana Peru, a
branch of the international organization for ocean conservation.
“The approval of the November [2022] initiative, which had been under
discussion since 2018, is an important step in tackling the growing illegal
trafficking of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife in the country,” Carmen Heck,
director of Public Policy at Oceana Peru, told Diálogo on January 3. “Illegal
wildlife trade is the fourth most lucrative illegal activity on the planet.”
This threat is closely linked to crimes such as narcotrafficking, corruption,
and money laundering, says Prevent Amazon, an initiative of the U.S. Agency for
International Development’s (USAID) Prevent Project, which provides tools for
the prevention of environmental crime.
“We are talking about a large-scale crime that is carried out through criminal
networks with international reach. Peru now has more efficient legal tools to
investigate, prosecute, and punish this highly complex illegal activity,” Heck
said. “Peru is taking a leading step in the region.”"
