"I am a beer-drinker. Not much, perhaps one or two a week, but I enjoy them.
However, after reading a paper from 2022 that reported there are up to 50,000
microplastic particles in a pint of beer, it started to put me off. The study
said around 90% of them are fragments of polystyrene or polypropylene. I could
imagine them floating around in my beer, invisible to the naked eye but
wreaking havoc to my digestive system.
Then I found out it’s not just plastic particles that gets into beer, but also
compounds that make plastic soft (called plasticisers), which leach out of
plastic tubing during the beer-making process. These compounds mimic hormones
and might be responsible for emerging global infertility.
The more I investigated microplastics, the wider the problem became. We have a
global microplastic problem that is totally out of control.
But is this a health problem? And if so, what can we do about it?
I spoke with Dr Stephanie Wright from Imperial College London, a lecturer in
Environmental Toxicology. She has over 12 years’ research experience in the
field of microplastics, specifically in exposure and biological impacts."
Cheers,
